Thinking about learning to surf in Byron Bay?

Here’s everything you need to know before catching your first wave.

There’s something pretty special about catching your first wave. The feeling of the ocean pushing you forward, the excitement of getting to your feet, and that huge smile when you realise you’ve actually done it.

If you’ve never surfed before, you might be wondering what your first lesson will be like. What should you bring? And what if you can’t stand up?

Don’t worry. Everyone starts somewhere, and at Soul Surf School, we’re all about making your first surfing experience fun, safe and memorable.

You don’t need any surfing experience

Seriously. None at all.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, haven’t spent much time in the ocean or have tried surfing a few times without much luck, your first lesson is all about learning the basics.

Our surf instructors are there to guide you through the experience, help you feel comfortable in the water and give you the encouragement you need to have a go.

And remember, surfing isn’t about standing up perfectly on your first attempt. It’s about having fun, learning something new and enjoying the ocean.

Your lessons start at the beach

Before jumping into the water, you’ll spend some time learning the fundamentals on the sand.

Your instructor will introduce you to the surfboard, explain how the lesson works and talk you through important ocean safety information.

You’ll learn some of the essentials, including:

  1. How to position yourself on your surfboard.
  2. The basics of paddling and catching waves.
  3. How to pop up from lying down to standing.
  4. How to keep your balance.
  5. How to stay safe and be aware of other people in the water.

Practising on the sand gives you a chance to get comfortable with the movements before trying them in the ocean.

Time to catch some waves!

Now for the fun part!

Once you’re ready, it’s time to head into the water and start putting everything you’ve learned into practice.

Your coach will help you understand when a wave is coming, how to position your board and when to get ready to stand up.

You might fall off a few times. Actually, you probably will! But that’s completely normal, and it’s all part of learning to surf.

One of the best things about a beginner surf lesson is watching everyone cheer each other on. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of catching your first wave.
